Dear Dr. Jane: I want to purchase cat food but I need a food with no ash or low ash because my cat has urinary tract problems. The food I am presently feeding is low ash. Can I feed any of your Life's Abundance cat food formulas?
Dr. Jane’s Answer: Ash content has been thought to create urinary tract problems in cats in the past. It is not true. It is twenty year old incorrect information that is still circulating. Ash is simply minerals that are left after something is burned. What causes urinary tract problems is generally because the food that an animal is on does not promote the proper PH of the urine. It is also caused by the general nature of cats to not drink enough water. Even if you put several dishes of water all over the house, they simply will not usually get enough.
This is why, for optimum health, I suggests giving a cat wet and dry food daily. Cats in nature obtain most of the water they need from the meat and stomach contents of their prey. This is why I developed the Instinctive Choice Canned Cat Food. It is designed to mimic a wild diet. It contains what I coin as biological water. It also has 3% less water (but ample enough for good health) so that more meat protein can be put in the can.
The water comes from broth so that it contains more nutrition. Most wet cat foods add tap water only. It contains 36% protein. If you will look on the ingredient list on the Instinctive Choice, you will see that I use couch grass. This is an extremely beneficial herb for the health of the urinary tract. It is one of the best things that anyone could feed their cat. If you have ever noticed, a cat that is kept indoors will eat grass when it is let out. If anyone is feeding their cat food that contains a lot of grains, they are doing their cat no good, even if it has a low ash content. Food like this promotes the incorrect Ph.
